Saying you should just be good for goodness' sake.

Why they're doing this, I don't know. It's not any more obnoxious than when Christians do it, you know. HONestly.

Though, on the other hand...

In mid-October, the American Family Association started selling buttons that say "It's OK to say Merry Christmas." The humanists' entry into the marketplace of ideas did not impress AFA president Tim Wildmon.

"It's a stupid ad," he said. "How do we define 'good' if we don't believe in God? God in his word, the Bible, tells us what's good and bad and right and wrong. If we are each ourselves defining what's good, it's going to be a crazy world."

All I can say to that is that Tom Wildmon is clearly nothing more than a petty-minded individual who seems opposed to the concept of people taking responsibility for their own actions and who doesn't want to live in the real world, messy and crazy and full of opposing moralities as it is. (That's the *polite* version.) The original could be said in four words, two of which was his name.

You know, sometimes I wonder if, assuming the definition of goodness comes from God, what if "good" is just... A random set of principles that happened to be God's characteristics. If God happened to "be" one who valued stealing things, then we would naturally believe in this world that stealing things is good.

It's the argument from authority taken to it's ultimate extreme. And yes, I do hear people make this argument all the time. So I am glad that atheists are being vocal along those lines.

Are they uh, closet Jews? It's a Jewish religious principle that good deeds should be performed for their own sake. (mitzvah lishmah) :]

When I say "merry christmas" It's my wish that on a certain day of the year, everything goes well for you and your day is full of merryment. That day may very well be a day that has special religious connotations for me (not really, honestly) or cultural connotations for me, but whether or not such a thing is the case hardly matters. I just want you to be happy that day (or, honestly, entire season).

Similarly, should someone wish me happiness on a day of religious import to them, I will feel honored that they think highly enough of me that they would want me happy on such a day.

I think it's sickening that rather than celebrate our cultural or religious differences, there are people who would rather we pretended that they didn't exist by avoiding saying various key words.
