I got to watch the news last night. They were talking about... the cruise ship! "Oh, the food was so bad and disgusting!" the kids say. Do tell. "A sandwich with just jelly and butter. A sandwich with just cheese!" That's disgusting? I brought that sort of thing to school with me for lunch as a kid! "Oh, the bathroom smelled!"

Look, I'm sure it wasn't very pleasant, and I feel for them, but nobody died, nobody seems to have been in any medical danger (if anybody was, we haven't heard about it), nobody starved or went particularly hungry (excepting those who were on a diet, of course), and it only lasted three days.

Why are we even still talking about it? WHY IS IT STILL ON THE NEWS?

I hate to use this line, but isn't there anything more important we can discuss?

I think people are pretty sick of talking about the economy, politics, and crazy people. The heartbreak of bad cheese sandwiches sounds like fun in comparison.

Cheese sandwiches? D: DO WANT! Seriously, if they don't want them, I'll happily take them!

Where are people's priorities anymore? =P

Well, the first factor is, they were on a cruise ship. >:P

That means they're Not Our Kind Of People. (I don't know anyone who has ever gone on a cruise.) And they probably don't eat our kind of food, either, from the whining above.

When my parents were alive, they went on at least one cruise every year, and they wouldn't have turned up their noses at plain cheese sandwiches in such a situation, nor would they have had any patience at all with the whining.

My siblings go on cruises fairly often, and I'm sure all three of them would also behave in a well-bred manner, quietly making the best of things and trying not to put more of a burden on the crew, who've got troubles enough already. They didn't all marry so well, however; I think my sister-in-law and one brother-in-law would probably lose their veneer of social grace and turn into fussing, demanding whiner-babies the first time the toilets didn't flush.

"Let them eat hardtack", sez me. (It's okay to pick out the weevils.)

LOL

Hardtack ain't that bad. ;D (http://marveen.livejournal.com/162418.html)

Hey, I used to make this very stuff to bake cookie-cutter Xmas-tree ornaments with my preschoolers and after-schoolers! Indeed, it bakes harder than a dog biscuit; I can't picture even the toughest of piratical old weevils getting much good from it.

The recipe would be better with a bit of butter and sugar, and some cinnamon to go on top. Probably engender a better class of weevils, too. Oh well; Tradition.

Might-could spoil faster, too. Remember, one of its virtues is that those from the batch I baked in January 2009--lying around on the shelf--are still perfectly edible: not moldy, not stale (well, not so's you'd notice), no weevils have shown up.... butter might upset the balance of things. It could certainly go rancid, for instance.

Umm... I have no idea what cruise ship this is or what happened. Although, apparently it wasn't very important, so I guess that's okay.

I didn't hear anything about this either, but just looked it up: it was the cruise ship Carnival Splendor (http://www.google.com/#q=Carnival+Splendor&hl=en&prmd=ivnl&source=univ&tbs=nws:1&tbo=u&ei=ZsPdTISHJ8Sp8AawgJHEDw&sa=X&oi=news_group&ct=title&resnum=1&sqi=2&ved=0CDIQqAIwAA&fp=6976c7c76e52f8f1), which had an engine fire, lost power and had to be towed to port, while the passengers had nothing to eat but fruit, ceral, sandwiches and fancy pastries for OMG FOUR DAYS.

Chelmsford couple says cruise was far from splendid (http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2010/11/chelmsford_coup.html?rss_id=Top+Stories)

Apparently the rum was not gone, though.

I wouldn't like that, but it's not exactly the Titanic. Unless you have a medical problem that requires something not available, it doesn't seem that awful.

A diabetic with severe allergies to wheat, dairy and chemical additives might pose a bit of a challenge for the kitchen crew, but they could surely work something out, and there wouldn't be more than a few people aboard with such critical restrictions.

It sounds to me like there was plenty to eat, and a pretty good variety, even if the quality of meals did decline from Luxury Cruise to Scout Camp.

LOL, I'm sure the passengers would have found their food much more appetizing if they'd spent their day out scouting before they came to eat it. Half-warmed beanie-wienies on a stale hamburger bun? NOM!!!!

*nods* Yeah that would be particularly hard. I have a very limited diet, but (although am not diabetic) and I'd have managed. Given that it was only four days, it isn't long enough to starve to death. Nor would I have needed to. I might have had to make do with a lot of cheese sandwiches, which isn't great either for taste or health (I didn't notice much in the way of veggies mentioned), and a small bit of fruit (too much fruit can be an issue for me, but I can eat some, but I'd manage.

Camping is actually tricky for me, but I can do it. It just takes thought in advance about what is easy to bring and prepare.

It's obviously a disappointing thing to have happen during your trip, although it may make for a good story afterward. But it doesn't rate up there with epic disasters of history.

Oh... nm, looked at the details... they had hard boiled eggs and salads and pesto... I'd have done quite well. Eggs are important, because they are useful protein, so I'd even have some decent health balance. But the presence of salad really means that I'd have had an okay food selection, because I wouldn't be devoid of veggies. Plus, I could put lettuce and pesto on my cheese sandwiches, which makes them tastier. And egg... and if they had other veggies... yeah... this can work out just fine. Getting hungry now.

Well sheesh, it sounds like they were perfectly well-provisioned, with no slightest cause for complaint, and now I'm getting hungry too. Mmmm, devilled eggs....

I dunno. Turkey and cheese sandwiches, or grilled cheese sandwiches - those sound good. Cold bread and cheese? Not so much.
From: [identity profile] marveen.livejournal.com
Take homemade bread, slice it neither too thick nor too thin, ditto the cheese* and layer. Bite in boldly and wash it down with hot tea from your King-Seely thermos. Another good one is Boston brown bread/black rye spread with cream cheese or soft goat cheese.

Maybe this country needs a real, for-true Depression to snap people out of general whininess.

*I favor cheddar: sharp by preference but I'll buy medium if it's on sale, which it generally is.

... be careful what you wish for, right? Because this shows every sign of being a real for-true Depression. Also recall that the last Depression ended in a World War, which would definitely not be good to repeat.

My parents were born in the Depression, and I heard a whole lot about it in my youth. My view on the matter is, that people get nostalgic for the decades of their youth, for the feeling of having been young. Maybe there's so much nostalgia around that particular era because the children of the Depression turned into the soldiers of WWII, and by the time it was over, the world of their childhood was already fading away, nearly gone.

Yeah, I'd complain about cold cheese sandwiches because I've always hated cheese unless it's melted or otherwise cooked...though thankfully right now I'm on medication where I could justifiably say I'm not allowed to eat them ;)
