Another editorial on the, uh, "mosque"

One on how technology may have come first, then our ancestors evolved into humans

You have to read it to believe it, a middle school that segregates class elections by race. WTF?

An incredibly obnoxious ad in Women's Day

An editorial about letting boys play with dolls, mostly only interesting because of the news story that triggered it.

Another article I can't quite describe, I'm a little pressed for time here

Did you have a link about the Greek Orthodox church that really was at Ground Zero?

Here's a better story that explains the trouble they're having with the Port Authority. (Nothing else has got built there either.)

The Cordoba project is NOT under the Port Authority because Cordoba is NOT in Ground Zero.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the agency overseeing reconstruction
....
On Monday, the Port Authority acknowledged that many parts of the sprawling reconstruction project — including the new PATH station, a 9/11 memorial and several office towers — faced delays of a year or more and cost overruns into the billions. With 26 interrelated projects squeezed onto 16 acres in Lower Manhattan, a delay or dispute at one project is almost certain to create problems at adjoining projects, the report concluded.
....
The church has for several years wanted to build the new St. Nicholas a block northeast of its original home on Cedar Street. But doing so would require trading land with the Port Authority, and an agreement has proven elusive. In the meantime, the church designed a domed marble complex that would be six times the size of its original home, and far more expensive.

In keeping with the archbishop’s vision, Mr. Koutsomitis planned for a roughly 24,000-square-foot marble church and adjoining spiritual center at an estimated cost of up to $40 million. But church leaders say they have raised only $4 million. JPMorgan Chase has agreed to give $10 million toward the rebuilding of St. Nicholas, as part of the bank’s tentative deal to build an office tower on the site of the Deutsche Bank building.
....
The church wants the [ Port Authority ] to provide roughly $55 million toward the estimated $75 million cost of rebuilding St. Nicholas. The Port Authority in turn wants the church to scale back its plans, move the location slightly and raise more money privately.

Wow... I take it that school hasn't had a lot of people of an ethnicity other than Black or White. So, if an Asian kid wants to run... I guess s/he's SOL.

I saw a different article on it, and it does look like the policy was created to ensure that the positions didn't end up entirely white... but I am glad this isn't likely to stay this way now that it's getting media attention. The quote about mixed-race kids was really unacceptable.

People seem to have no sense of history. The extent to which men wear fancy clothes is one of those things that goes in and out of fashion throughout times and cultures. You can see lots of paintings of men in very fancy, foofy clothes made of soft, nice materials. In fact, it's very common for males in general to be colorful and decorative, since they tend to be the ones trying to attract mates (not all species go to the peacock extreme, obviously, but still males are often colorful).

I really am glad that I am not stuck in quite so rigid gender roles. I am in a relationship with a straight male who has very good design sense and is very useful for clothing and color advice, which is good as I have no ability in these areas. On the downside, he doesn't like shopping, so it's hard to actually make use of his abilities, but when I can get his feedback, it's quite helpful. He's also responsible for some of the nicer choices for what furniture we chose to setup our home. I thought the red bookcases would be a bit too much, but he's right that they go alright and aren't too brightly red. I'm really quite sure he's not gay or even bi. If he were bi, there'd really be no reason for him not to come out. I certainly wouldn't mind. Oh, and he also drinks fancy coffee drinks. I am okay with this. :)

"If they build it here, we'll bombard it."

Y'know, I'm almost sure there's a word for practises like that. I think it starts with a 't'...

That article about pressure in Kindergarten interviews the principal and parents at a school in Winston-Salem NC. It stopped me cold so I could call my sister and confirm: My brother-in-law teaches at that middle school. He actually knows some of those kids and tells me that they are now in the oddly-acronymized HAG (Highly Academically Gifted) program in his district.
